Kia ora and Welcome
Nestled on the stunning west coast of New Zealand, Hīmatangi Beach offers an inviting escape for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure. A place where the local community thrives and visitors become part of the family, we invite you to explore the natural beauty, rich culture, and unique experiences that make Hīmatangi Beach a must-visit destination.
The Who, Where, What
Hīmatangi Beach is a close-knit coastal village on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Home to around 650 permanent residents, our community may be just 55 years young, but it’s full of character, history, and beachside charm.
What to do with your time
Whether you’re here for a day, a week, or settling in for good, Hīmatangi Beach has plenty to keep you entertained. Enjoy the playground, BMX track, skate park, basketball hoop, tennis court, and public BBQs. Join in at the bowling club, surf club, fitness groups, book club, or local church — and that’s only the beginning. There’s always something happening in our little community
Weather
Hīmatangi Beach has its own unique micro-climate, so don’t always trust the weather forecast! Autumn and spring can bring their share of wild, windy days, and even the occasional winter frost. But summer rewards us with plenty of long, warm days. Want to see for yourself? Take a look through the Horizons webcam.
Our beach
The ocean at Hīmatangi Beach can be calm and glassy one day, and wild the next, so always stay alert for rips. Our surf lifesavers are on patrol throughout the summer months to help keep everyone safe.
Our beach also serves as a road, so please follow normal road rules and watch carefully for pedestrians. Before driving onto the sand, always check the conditions of the beach and creek, and remember — we strongly recommend 4WD vehicles only

Weddings
Rain or shine, our beautiful beach makes a great backdrop for those wedding photos. The hall has a fully equipped commercial kitchen and makes a great wedding venue.
Concerts
Remember when Neil and Liam Finn came and played at the beach, it can be done and it makes for an awesome night.
